1974年坝上腊月，知青帅红兵被分配给新上任的革委会大队长牛鲜花监管，喜爱文艺的牛鲜花欣赏帅红兵的才艺，对他处处加以保护，帅红兵的女友知青刘青因此怀恨在心。为了早日回城，帅红兵在一次事故中受重伤失去语言及思考能力，而其父母均被关在牛棚，牛鲜花毅然决定与帅红兵结婚，照顾其终生，刘青含恨回城。“四人帮”粉碎后，帅红兵父母平反，牛鲜花与帅红兵带一双女儿回城。离开话剧团下海经商的帅红兵同情刘青的不幸婚姻，二人终于又走到一起。离异的牛鲜花一人挑起家庭的重担，从摆街摊到经营水产品公司，终于在事业上获得成功，却与刘青和帅红兵的公司数次正面交锋……。We take our liberties for granted.
